??

The 2025 Sichuan Nanchong (Xichong) Organic Industry Innovation and Development Conference is based on the long-term cooperation contract between Xichong County and IFOAM-Organics Asia and similar conferences have been successfully co-organized in 2019, 2021 and 2023.

More than 100 international and local speakers from over 10 countries and areas have spoken on various topics such as Climate Change, low-carbon emissions and on innovations related to organic agriculture. The participants also had the opportunity to visit Chongguoli Organic Lifestyle Block, Northeast Sichuan Deep Processing Industrial Park for Organic Agricultural Products, and the Modern Technology Seedling Cultivation Center.

Global climate change is considered one of the most urgent environmental problems and agriculture is also affected by it to a major extent. Increasing global warming will shift cultivation areas, affect plant growth and production due to the decrease in rainfall, the increase of UV-B radiation, and changes in the atmosphere. Soils are seriously affected increasing in desiccation, salinity, erosions and desertification – all these leading to decrease in agricultural yields.

Since climate change has a direct impact on agriculture, environmentally sound farming methods such as organic agriculture need to be developed and practiced.

Organic agriculture not only enables ecosystems to better adjust to the effects of climate change but also offers a major potential to reduce the emissions of agricultural greenhouse gases. Moreover, mixed farming and the diversity of organic crop rotations protects the fragile soil surface and counteract climate change by restoring the organic matter content.

In acknowledging the above, we, the participants from over 13 countries and areas, hereby affirm once again, the following values and impacts of Organic Agriculture:

1. Organic agriculture can significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions as the use of by eliminating the use of synthetic nitrogen fertilizers and harmful chemicals are forbidden. These practices lead to enhanced carbon sequestration in soilsand improving soil organic carbon content. When combined with other sustainable practices, organic agriculture can contribute to substantial reductions in agricultural emissions by about 20%.

2. Organic agriculture generally uses less non-renewable energy compared to conventional farms, contributing to lower carbon footprints. Organic agriculture utilizes renewable energy sources like solar, wind, and biomass to minimize environmental impact, and enhance long-term sustainability.

3. Organic agriculture supports diverse ecosystems and promotes natural habitats for pollinators and beneficial organisms. Organic agriculture practices help crops withstand extreme weather conditions, making food systems more resilient by improving soil structure and water retention. Crop-livestock circulatory mixed farming systems contribute to carbon sequestration and mitigating climate change.

Based on these affirmations, we, the participants, call on the relevant  public and private stakeholders to:

4. Set up government subsidies and grants to farmers to encourage conversion from conventional farming to more sustainable agriculture.

5. Establish organic standards and certification processes to ensure consumer trust and market stability.

6. Implement government policies and measures to protect organic farms from contamination by genetically modified crops and synthetic pesticides.

7. Increase the public procurement of organic food and integrate organic ingredients into school feeding programs and public canteens, creating a stable demand for organic food.

8. Implement organic agriculture practices as one of the pathways to accomplishing the carbon sink of the Kyoto Protocol under Articles 3 and 4 and supporting smallholder organic farmers through land tenure policies, cooperatives, and income diversification measuresas outlined under the United Nations Decade of Family Farming (2019–2028).

9. Support innovations and emerging technologies and methods in organic agriculture to improve performance and reduce Green House Gas emissions throughout  the whole supply chain.

10. Increase government budget for organic agricultural research from the current rate of less than 1% of the total agricultural research allocation. Research  in organic agriculture has been underfunded compared to other areas of agricultural research. More research is needed to address challenges faced by organic producers and improve the efficiency and sustainability of organic farming systems.
